Ice House trail and a theme park
This weekend was a long one because of the holiday (we get the day off for Veterans' Day) so we went for drinks in downtown Riverside with some people on the Thursday to get the weekend started. On Friday, Mitchell had physiotherapy early in the morning for his knee, and then we went out for breakfast in the little Canyon Crest shopping area. We've been on a mission lately to find some good breakfast spots, and this one seemed a good option with lots of vegetarian choices.
We then spent the rest of the day running some errands and Mitchell had to go into work to pick up his office keys as he'd locked himself out the day before.
On Saturday we drove up to the Cucamonga wilderness for a big day hike. It was a busy day and even though there was a fairly big car park, there were no spots left and we had to park on the street below.
But once we were over that and had filled out our wilderness permit, we were off! The trail followed a river which had quite a bit of water in it. It was quite cold that day, but if it had been warmer, we maybe would have gone for a paddle.
There were a few cabins at the start of the trail, one even had smoke coming out of the chimney, and a few ex-cabins where all that remained was the chimney or a few walls.
We had come at a good time of year, and some the trees were really bright in their autumn colours. We found one which positively glowed under the sunlight and took some photos.
The trail was uphill and took us until lunchtime to get to the top. By this point we were tired and in need of a break, but it was so much colder and windy at the pass which marked the end of the trail for us. We ate our lunch, but didn't stop long to take in the surroundings. We quickly set off again, but took a slightly different route down.
The route was quite fun, and was very narrow in places, with the edges falling away sharply. It was rocky here, but it did mean we warmed up quickly with the brief lack of shade.
Along this new trail, we also passed another creek which made the whole section bloom with green leaves and a cotton like plant. It was very beautiful and made us glad we'd chosen this route down even though it was longer.
We re-joined the original pathway and made our way back to the car, exhausted but glad we'd done this pretty 9-mile hike.
But that wasn't it for our weekend! On Monday (our new day off) we went to a local theme park called Knotts Berry Farm. They'd had a deal on for season tickets in October, so we bought them as they have a big berry festival in spring that we want to go to, and it was the same price to get these season passes as it is to get single day tickets.
They opened at 10am and we arrived soon after. It wasn't too busy being a Monday, so we managed to go on lots of roller coasters with barely any wait times. We decided against one ride which neither of us really wanted to try, and one which had an hours wait and seemed similar to one we'd just done with a 5 minute wait.
Instead we did our favourites again and got a milkshake.
We even did the log flume (even after my disastrous time at Disneyland) and a ride which just took you up in a tower where you could see the whole park and beyond. The park had a few different areas: a 60s surfer themed area; a Snoopy land (which had all the kids' rides), a Mexican fiesta village, and the largest area was Wild West/Ghost Town themed. This area was pretty cool and had a few streets of shops and food stalls, all in old style buildings. They even had a cemetery, a horse and carriage and a train running through.
