The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures

 This weekend we went to LA to visit the Academy Museum. This is a museum dedicated to Hollywood and the Oscars and had all sorts of exhibits. The reason the group wanted to go was because of a Miyazaki exhibit, the person who made a lot of Ghibli films, which is like the Japanese Disney. 


To prepare, we had a movie night during the week at Susan's where we watched Spirited Away which is the Ghibli film which was nominated for an Oscar (and Susan hadn't seen it). We got some Mexican food and some snacks and had a nice evening. 

On Saturday, Susan and AJ picked us up and we met Andrea and Christian at the museum. The first stop though, was lunch! The museum had a cafe and we got some tasty food and sat around a very fancy table in an area which had been decorated in a 1920s style.

Then it was into the museum. The Miyazaki exhibit was very pretty with lights on the walls, an illuminated tree and original artwork on display. Unfortunately, we weren't allowed to take pictures inside, but we did take some of the display outside.

Next to this, on the top floor, was a balcony which overlooked Hollywood and we could just about see the sign on the hills. 

We then worked our way through the rest of the exhibits which had information about all the aspects of the movies, from the history of the awards, to costumes and old recording equipment. My favourite part was the costumes, they had outfits from Black Panther, 1960s Cleopatra, Edward Scissorhands, and models from ET, Star Wars, the Shape of Water, the shark from Jaws and more.

After we'd finished looking at all the exhibits, we went for some dinner. We went to the Grove which was nearby and is a big outdoor shopping centre and very pretty. It even had a trolley running through the middle to get people from one end to the other. We walked to the end where the Farmers Market was with lots of food stalls and decided on Trejo's Tacos (as in Danny Trejo the actor). They were really good and Mitchell also got some empanadas which are like Mexican pasties. We then got some milkshakes too, but it was getting kind of cold so we didn't stay too much longer.

On Sunday we had a nice day at home as we haven't had one since before I started work and we needed some chill time. 

Then on Tuesday, we went to the glow in the dark mini golf with everyone after work. It was fun and there were a lot of holes, making it quite the challenge! Before we went, we went to get some dinner at a place nearby that Quynh suggested. It was Korean and very tasty. My kimchi soup came out still bubbling in its pot!

After we arrived back in England, we managed to see a lot of friends and family over Christmas, but not everyone. So once the festivities were over, we went on a little tour to visit some more people we hadn't seen in a few years.  Right after Christmas, we headed to the North by visiting Mitchell's mum for a few days. We took some lovely walks through the countryside and along the beach. One day we walked from Sutton on Sea to Chapel St Leonards to visit the North Sea Observatory. We walked through fields and followed the coastline all the way down.  We also went to Donna Nook and saw some seals! On New Year's Day, Mitchell and his mum went for a dip in the ocean! Another day we did the Top of the Wolds trail, which was about 5 miles. We started in the little village of South Elkington, and about half way we stopped for lunch in Louth. New Zealand

 After Singapore, our next destination was New Zealand! This was something I'd been looking forward to, as it promised to be a mountain lover's dream.  We spent the first three days in Christchurch, exploring the city and catching up on sleep after our long flights. Our first full day, we walked around the city and running some errands. We had to print off our taxes so we went to the public library which was very fancy and had a rooftop garden.  We then had to post our taxes, so we went in search of a post office. We found a booth in a chemist and sent them off, so we don't have to worry about them any more for this year. Errands complete, we grabbed some lunch in a little shopping centre and then continued on exploring the city. Japan pt 1: Tokyo and Kyoto

We arrived later than expected into Japan as our first flight was delayed and we missed our connection. So we grabbed some food in the Shanghai airport while we waited for our new flight, but it wasn't long until we were touching down in Tokyo! On day one we went to a little cafe for breakfast that did veggie plates and rice balls, and then it was into the city to explore. We went to Akihabra, or electric town, which has tons of tech, video game and anime stores. We bought some fun headphones and a crepe and looked around some of the shops.  We also went to visit a bunny cafe! On day two, we went to the Shibuya scramble, one of the busiest crossings in the world. It was mainly busy with tourists taking photos, but all the light up billboards around the place were pretty iconic.
