The Getty Centre and LA

 This weekend we went on a trip with some of Mitchell's work pals to the art museum The Getty Center (there's also the Getty Villa, but we'll visit that another day). Andrea picked us up and after a quick stop at a drive-thru starbucks we were on our way!

It took about an hour and twenty minutes which wasn't so bad considering the traffic in LA. The parking structure is at the bottom of the hill, and the museum right at the top, so they have trams which shuttle people up and down! It gave some pretty cool views of LA, although it was a pretty smoggy day. Side note: the pollution was really bad, the sky was clear above us, but there was a haze going all across the city and it really irritated our eyes throughout the day.

The Museum had a lot of renaissance art from 17th century Europe and some sculptures and gilded furniture from similar times. They also had beautiful gardens where we spent some time getting some fun group shots for our various instagram accounts. 



We stopped for a snack before finishing up seeing all it had to offer. We then thought about where to go for food. Quynh had thoughtfully sent me a list of all the possible places in advance so I could check them out and form opinions before going. We went to Grand Central Market, which was like the foodlab in Riverside, but absolutely huge! It was more like a market too, with high ceilings and some grocers mixed in. I got some ramen, Mitchell got a burger and we shared some pizza fries (fries covered with tomato sauce and cheese). Some of the others got pupusa which is a Salvadoran dish and looked really tasty, so we'll have to get that next time. 

Once we'd eaten, we walked the block and a half to a famous bookstore. It's called The Last Bookstore and is very cool inside. They had a live band setting up when we arrived and there were so many displays around. We found a book tunnel, a book house and they had individual rooms for some genres, like horror, where they'd decorated accordingly. We got some more pictures and then it was time to head home. 




A great day in LA and so nice to be taken around by some (nearly) locals!

Last week we also did an escape room in Riverside with the same group of people plus a few more. We managed to escape and even though there were 11 of us, it didn't feel like there wasn't enough to do. We then went and had some of the best ramen I've ever had and it was right in the town centre of Riverside. Stage three of the night was everyone back to Susan's to play MarioKart. Lots of fun!

This weekend is Thanksgiving, so Mitchell has the Thursday and the Friday off from work. We're making the most of it and going to Joshua Tree National Park for a few nights! They have a bunch of weird cacti and some great stargazing apparently.

After we arrived back in England, we managed to see a lot of friends and family over Christmas, but not everyone. So once the festivities were over, we went on a little tour to visit some more people we hadn't seen in a few years.  Right after Christmas, we headed to the North by visiting Mitchell's mum for a few days. We took some lovely walks through the countryside and along the beach. One day we walked from Sutton on Sea to Chapel St Leonards to visit the North Sea Observatory. We walked through fields and followed the coastline all the way down.  We also went to Donna Nook and saw some seals! On New Year's Day, Mitchell and his mum went for a dip in the ocean! Another day we did the Top of the Wolds trail, which was about 5 miles. We started in the little village of South Elkington, and about half way we stopped for lunch in Louth. New Zealand

 After Singapore, our next destination was New Zealand! This was something I'd been looking forward to, as it promised to be a mountain lover's dream.  We spent the first three days in Christchurch, exploring the city and catching up on sleep after our long flights. Our first full day, we walked around the city and running some errands. We had to print off our taxes so we went to the public library which was very fancy and had a rooftop garden.  We then had to post our taxes, so we went in search of a post office. We found a booth in a chemist and sent them off, so we don't have to worry about them any more for this year. Errands complete, we grabbed some lunch in a little shopping centre and then continued on exploring the city. Japan pt 1: Tokyo and Kyoto

We arrived later than expected into Japan as our first flight was delayed and we missed our connection. So we grabbed some food in the Shanghai airport while we waited for our new flight, but it wasn't long until we were touching down in Tokyo! On day one we went to a little cafe for breakfast that did veggie plates and rice balls, and then it was into the city to explore. We went to Akihabra, or electric town, which has tons of tech, video game and anime stores. We bought some fun headphones and a crepe and looked around some of the shops.  We also went to visit a bunny cafe! On day two, we went to the Shibuya scramble, one of the busiest crossings in the world. It was mainly busy with tourists taking photos, but all the light up billboards around the place were pretty iconic.
